Sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) has extensive applications in the medical field due to its excellent biocompatibility, thickening property, adhesiveness and sustained-release performance.

Binders and disintegrants for drug tablets

In tablet preparation, CMC is used as a binder to help shape powdered drug components. For instance, some oral tablets (such as paracetamol tablets) use CMC as an excipient to ensure the hardness and integrity of the tablets, improve the adhesion of the drug particles, and at the same time, it can swell rapidly in water, promoting the disintegration of the tablets (as a disintegrant).

Sustained-release drug carriers

CMC can be used to prepare sustained-release skeleton tablets, such as theophylline sustained-release tablets. On the one hand, by adjusting the viscosity grade of CMC, the drug release rate can be controlled and the efficacy can be prolonged. On the other hand, it forms a gel layer in the gastrointestinal tract, delaying the diffusion of the drug and achieving continuous release.

Topical medications (gel, ointment)

Oral ulcer gel: CMC serves as the matrix (such as compound chamomelidocaine gel), providing adhesion and prolonging the retention time of the drug on the ulcer surface.

Burn dressings: CMC combined with silver ions (such as silver dressings) is used for anti-infection of wounds and maintaining a moist environment. It has good film-forming and moisturizing properties, promoting wound healing.

Thickener for eye drops

CMC is often added to artificial tears (such as hydroxypropyl methylcellulose eye drops) to increase viscosity and prolong the retention time on the ocular surface, thereby alleviating dry eye syndrome. It also has relatively high biocompatibility and is non-irritating to the eyes.

Biological adhesion agent

Oral or vaginal adhesion tablets (such as clotrimazole vaginal tablets) use CMC as the adhesion material to enhance the local retention and absorption of the drug on the mucosa, prolong the duration of drug action, and reduce the frequency of administration.

Drug coating materials

In the coating of enteric-coated tablets, CMC is used in combination with other polymers (such as acrylic resin) to protect the drug from being decomposed in gastric acid and to target its release in the intestinal tract.
